Access to Substance Abuse Programs Keeps Individuals out of Prison

Resources are widely available on-line to help prisoners with mental health and/or substance abuse problems. A publication by the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) released in May of this year estimates that 60% of incarcerated individuals battle drug or alcohol addiction. The majority of incarcerated individuals with mental health problems are dependent on drugs.

The CEA also found that recidivism rates declined by about 21% with the use of mental health programs. When incarcerated individuals had access to substance abuse programs, recidivism declined by about 17%. The economics of reduced recidivism are staggering.
